Last week I came across a very Interesting Web Application which calculates your age if you were living in another world (or planet).
The website Exploratorium which host the application also have a number of interesting information which you can follow up and learn quite a bit.
Meanwhile back on earth, the Mayan Calendar predicts that the world will end on December 21, 2012 when the Mayan "long count" calender marks the end of its 5,126 years. The Mayan long count calender was used by Pre-Columbian Mayan civilization where dates are counted forward from a point encompassing a 52 year cycle.
Is this another conspiracy theory or is there some truth to it?
What intrigues me the most in all this is how arbitrary are the things that we so dogmatically accept to be unquestionable. In other words if conventional wisdom at the time leaned towards a 50 Hour day then it would be second nature to us now. The Mayan Civilization if it were globally dominant today would dictate the acceptable truths but of course the Gregorian System is what is internationally accepted.
For example we now know that there are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, 4 weeks in a month, 12 months in a year and about 365 days in a year.
We have grown to accept these things as the science backs it up very well. The sun rise and set at the break of morning and night respectively and the seasons vary with the months and through the year - it works for us so we don't care.
I am curious to know however, who's idea it was to call today Sunday or Monday as it were and why we didn't have 15 days in a week or 240 months in a year. That would make me 20 times younger than I am today. To think of it I would be a big 2 year old man.
I know you're thinking: It would be a world of babies. And you are not far off, except that we could equally be a world of old people too. That is, if there were 1.2 months in a year we would all be 10 times older than we are now. So all teenagers would be between 130 and 190 years old and your 90 year old grandfather would be 900, almost as old as Noah
Noah according to the story in Genesis Chapter 6 through 9 (King James Version) died some 350 years after the flood at age 950.
Why are we not living so long today, or is it that in those days as it were the calendar was different - such that 90 years was thought of as 900.
So you see how messed up things can get when we start to deconstruct the dogmas. It is built into our system to accept things the way they are or should I say the way that conventional wisdom dictates.
What happens when conventional wisdom fail?
Could it be that the world ends at different times for everybody - like when we die. Maybe this apoclyptic notion is a function of our education. Or is it?
Should we be occupied with these concerns anyway, when we have no control over what happens?
My recommendation is that we should get our lives in order such that we are at peace with our world and our creator. That way we can live without fear or worry, accepting things we cannot change and changing things we cannot accept.
Are you concerned about the world ending this year?
